Advice, My Opinion, Seasonal

My Favourite Winter Beers

A couple years ago, I wrote a blog post about my favourite beers to enjoy on a snowy evening. Well since then, there have been a ton of different types of beers that I have tried and are also great for warming your tummy on a January night. So here is an updated list of my favourite beers to enjoy in the colder months of the year! This time I’m going to stick less to the stouts and porters, and recommend all types of beers.

Henderson Brewing Co Vanilla Orchid

SOBDL-Brew-0002-1024x1024I’ll admit, I originally bought this brown ale because on the can it says “Society of Beer Drinking Ladies” and I thought hey, I’m a beer drinking lady! It was already in my basket before I even saw what kind of beer it was or what flavouring it had. That being said, I definitely didn’t regret buying two because it was delicious! Super smooth and a little sweet, this is a great beer to enjoy with dinner or snacks. I was interested to know what orchid tasted like and it turns out its just a very light flavour that accompanies the vanilla perfectly. The flavour actually comes from steeped vanilla orchid rooibos tea. It sits at 5% ABV and all in all, it’s a very pleasing drink.

Big Rock Holiday Cheers

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (2)Here is another beer that first pulled me in with its interesting can but had me coming back for more once I tasted it. I mean just look at that Christmas jumper pattern! This winter ale is absolutely delicious. It’s spiced to taste just like Christmas, with cinnamon, clove, caramel, nutmeg, and ginger. It is a rather strong flavour as well, so if you don’t like that classic combination, this isn’t the beer for you. It’s also very smooth and sweet, going down easy and a great partner to desserts and baked goods. It’s a good 6% ABV and has a great malty finish.

Waterloo Brewing Salted Caramel Porter

Salted caramel anything is basically my all-time favourite flavour. Cookies, cakes, coffee, you name it. Also, my favourite type of beer is a porter. So when I saw that Waterloo Brewing had a salted caramel porter, it was like love at first sight. I knew I had to get it, even though I was pretty sure I would be disappointed by an underwhelming flavour. I was very wrong! This beer nails both sides of the flavour, with warm caramel and a salty finish. It’s quite sweet, which is part of the reason I like it so much. At 6% ABV, it is definitely hearty and filling. My usual go-to beer for starting off the night with a sweet, rich, and decadent start.

Whitewater Brewing Co Peanut Butter Shake

cq5dam.web.1280.1280 (3)Can you tell I really enjoy dark but sweet beers, usually flavoured like a rich dessert? This milk stout is brewed to taste exactly like a chocolatey, peanut butter milkshake and it pretty much nails it. You might think that peanuts and beer only belong next to each other on a bar and not brewed together, but this beer will prove you wrong. So smooth, rich, and creamy, this 4.5% ABV stout goes down so easy you’ll feel like you’re having dessert with dinner.  Not to mention the can has some interesting, retro malt-shop art on it. With 30 IBU, it can be a bit strong for some people, but I find it balances it very well with the sweetness of the chocolate and peanut butter flavours.

Let me know if you try any of these beers and what you think of them! Got any recommendations for me? Leave it all in the comments!
